I’ll always remember the first time I saw Bardz perform. His unique live set set him apart from many other local djs. It was one of the Happy Camper popup events and it was clear to me how comfortable he was as he played. As a singer/musician myself, I’ve always especially appreciated live sets, because it adds such an element of surprise and skill. With focus and intensity in his clear eyes, coupled with his moody good looks, he is a pleasure to watch.
Bardz’s new single, a remix of Phil Collins’ popular classic, ‘In the Air Tonight’ starts out with a beautiful angelic sound: think angels in the heavens, floaty, dreamy birds in a clear blue sky. It kinda reminds of a trance track, in the way simple piano notes are held on the sustain pedal. Little washes of clear, tiny, bell-like tinkles are interspersed with Phil’s vocals as he starts singing. Drums, along with the electric guitar, start, and the track increases in intensity. Shakers add great percussion while hints of a wood flute carry the song along. A quick drum section that occurs right before the first drop is perfectly timed to add dynamic and drive. It’s my favorite part: very future-bass-y, think Illenium, Gryffin and the like. Honestly it gave me legitimate chills. As Phil Collin croons, “Can you feel it? Can you feel it coming?” leading to the second drop, I get goosebumps once again. The main drumline carries the beat and rhythm of the song, while little beats of percussion here and there change it up every now and then. The keyboards in this song are a key element: they carry the song and give the song its ‘floaty’ feel while the higher-pitched notes add distinct layers. The simple, succinct violin part is enough to move one to tears with its sweetness, as the song fades out to a still, muted forest chirping.
Listening to the original track and comparing it to this remix, I can speak without a doubt that Bardz has done a brilliant job of making this piece EDM-worthy. It’s not too often one can remix a classic track and do it well. Bardz adds superb instrumentation that brings significant depth and texture to the song. Along with that, this track’s artwork is a beautiful homage to the great Phil Collins and is perfectly suited for the song. With his musical abilities and an avid and ever-growing fan base, it’s easy to see why Bardz is destined for great heights. He’ll be playing mainstage at Goldrush 2018 so be sure to catch his set. Watch this space because Bardz is definitely about to burn it up.
